The Transition of ZIAA Leadership: A New Chapter is Unfolding

In the realm of organisational shifts and changes, the Zambians in Aotearoa executive board has stepped down today, paving way for the fresh elections. Dr. Munanga Mwandila, the Chairperson, has passed on the baton to Ms. Grace Muyoma, the Matron, who will be custodian of the association over the next 3 months. As we bid farewell to the outgoing leadership, we await with bated breath the forthcoming elections that will transpire during the AGM held in conjunction with the upcoming independence celebrations in October in Wellington. This editorial delves into the essence of this transition and anticipates the dawn of a new era for ZIAA.

The resounding echoes of change reverberate through the Zambians in Aotearoa as stewardship of the association was formally handed over to the Matron Ms Grace Muyoma, in preparation for the elections. Under Dr Mwandila's leadership, the dedication of the ZIAA executive has been unquestionable, steering the community through myriad challenges and triumphs.

Last year was indeed a busy and eventful year for the association and the community. Various significant events took place, including:

  • Hosting the Copper Queens for the FIFA Women's World Cup in Hamilton and Auckland

  • The first-ever Zambians in Australia and New Zealand (ZANZ) conference in Melbourne

  • Participating in African Day in Auckland

  • The Annual Independence Celebration in Christchurch

And this was all whilst running working groups looking at a myriad of things important to the community including Passports and Dual Citizenships, Youth engagement, Financial wellbeing, Cultural development as well as Health and Wellbeing.

Reflecting on their tenure, it's evident that their visionary approach has laid a robust foundation for growth and development of ZIAA, as some of that work actively continues in the background to date.

Stepping temporarily into the helm as caretaker over the next 3 months, as per the constitution, is the Matron for the association, Ms. Grace Muyoma, whose passion for the community and unwavering commitment speak volumes. She will be assisted by Mr Richard Mwaijumba and Dr Alan Mbita to conduct the elections.

The impending elections, slated to take place in three months during the AGM coinciding with the independence celebrations, herald a moment of democratic fervor within ZIAA. It is during these elections that new officer bearers will ascend to their respective roles, bringing with them a fresh energy and renewed zeal to drive the association forward. The anticipation surrounding the elections will become even more palpable, as the date draws closer and members gear up to exercise their right to choose the individuals who will lead them into the future.

As we await the dawn of a new era for the ZIAA, it is essential to reflect on the core values that underpin the association. Unity, diversity, and community spirit form the bedrock of the Zambians in Aotearoa, fostering an environment where every voice is heard, and every contribution is valued. The incoming leadership, tasked with upholding these values, holds the key to fostering a stronger sense of belonging and camaraderie among members.

In the midst of change and transition, it is crucial to acknowledge the contributions of those who have steered the organization to where it stands today, from the current executive, the interim one preceding it and all of the community members who have continued to enrich the association.

As we look towards the horizon, the winds of change are tinged with excitement and anticipation. The Zambians in Aotearoa stand on the cusp of a new beginning, where old chapters close, and new narratives unfold. The vibrancy of the community, the richness of its culture, and the camaraderie of its members pave the way for a future brimming with endless possibilities.

In conclusion, the transition of leadership within the ZIAA heralds a chapter of renewal, growth, and unity. As the association prepares for the upcoming elections and the independence celebrations, the spirit of community and collaboration reigns supreme. The Zambians in Aotearoa stride confidently into a tomorrow filled with promise and potential.

In the spirit of change and continuity, the Zambians in Aotearoa embark on a journey that celebrates the past, embraces the present, and envisions a future built on solidarity and shared aspirations.

See you in Wellington.
