Mental Health Resilience in the Diaspora

By Catherine Simwinga

Football is well and truly gone but the memories still linger on. Some of us were not avid fans but by the time the last Coper Queens game was played, we were converted. It was lovely to see the camaraderie and friendships forged through common ground.

Now it’s time to check in and remind ourselves of the upcoming question and answer session on the Friday, 18 August 2023 at 11:00 am 12:00 pm (Melbourne time). It is online and our very own High Commissioner will be on the panel.

I also thought to point out some changes that the government has put in place concerning access to counselling. The focus for government funded counselling is Māori, Pacifica and community services card holders. This means that some of us who might not fall in the above categories may not qualify even when we might be having some financial challenges. However, there are a few avenues that we can use to access counseling such as Shama ethnic women trust and Diversity Counseling NZ (DCNZ). These two organisations offer counselling for ethnic minority communities. If others know of any other organisations that offer counselling services, please add on so that we are all aware.

There’s help out there so don’t despair.
