If you don't know what this saying/proverb means, your challenge this month is to connect with someone who does.
What tribe does it originate from? What is the loose translation? What is your interpretation?
If you do, it's a perfect time to reflect on what this proverb means and has meant to you.
Watch this video. Reflect on it and share your reflections with whānua.
Looking ahead: how rhythm carries us forward
One interpretation is 'forward momentum requires focus and consistency'. As we move into the new year, we are all challenged to show up - for ourselves, for community, for family, and our purpose.
ZIAA steps into the year with a focus on our fundraising strategy, increasing our paid membership, and cultural preservation. We want to hear from our members who are proactive in creating businesses, organising community events, and mentoring youth. Your ideas, skills and networks may be helpful.
2025 was an eventful year. We had our annual Tiyende Pamodzi retreat. Thank you to the Waikato team for hosting such a great weekend. The post retreat survey showed that attendees had a great time, they enjoyed the pace of the weekend (a bit of fun and spare time to catch up), and were engaged by the talks presented. And importantly, we saw some good feedback from our youth who felt engaged.
We also recieved some feedback on some things we can work on to keep improving the retreat. That feedback will be used to plan for this year's event in Auckland. Watch this space for more details.
Practical things you can do to engage more with the community this year
Getting involved doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some simple steps to start this year:
Commit to paying your ZIAA membership this year: many of us committed to this at Tiyende Pamodzi 2025. Your fees are crucial to keeping the association moving forward.
Attend or organise community events: Big or small, these are great places to meet people and learn more.
Volunteer your time: The ZIAA Executive is always looking for community support. Your skills, your knowledge, or your network could help us make our Association stronger.
Keep sharing your stories: Whether you’re new or have been here a while, your experiences can inspire others. Share your chikanda or vitumbuwa recipes. Our WhatsApp group chat is a great place to share useful, fun and inspirational stories.
Support follow Zambian businesses: This strengthens the community economically and promotes cultural pride.
There are many ways to contribute. Whether through supporting cultural education or activities, your involvement matters. Together, we can build a thriving, connected, and proactive Zambian community.
